Like Great Great Grandfather like Great Great Grandson
A skilled and highly inventive carpenter and joiner, Dane has been craft ing and working in wood for over 10 years, having moved here to Jersey at the tender age of 16. But, while Dane’s skills would certainly have made Great, Great Grandfather Thomas justifiably proud, his approach and understanding of contemporary techniques and materials, like some of the tools he uses, are cutting edge and absolutely up-to-date. And it’s true that Dane is never happier than when faced with solving a seemingly intractable and complex problem, such as creating a storage solution where none seems possible or even, famously, devising and constructing a ‘secret’ door.
Having said that, however, Dane’s unique skills can transform any home or office environment, both inside and out, with the beauty of wood in everything from a single door to bespoke creations tailored to a customer’s own personal requirements whatever your style may be.

Watergate Bespoke Carpentry is Dane Mealing. But, unlike many small businesses, Dane has a number of people behind him. People like Dane’s Great, Great Grandfather Thomas, a bespoke cabinet maker with premises on Watergate Street (hence the name of Dane’s company ) in Chester in the latter half of the 19th century.
Thomas’s greatest claim to fame was a handcarved chair presented as a gift to Queen Victoria, no less, way back in 1900. Thomas was duly invited to Windsor but prevented from attending by his wife’s illness with The Queen ultimately paying Thomas £5 for the chair (a not inconsiderable sum in those days) which even now enjoys pride of place in Balmoral. While many of Thomas’s other masterpieces have found themselves achieving remarkable hammer prices at Christie’s in London.
The fact is, the Mealing family has a long and distinguished history of creating the most exquisite work in wood. A noble tradition that Dane is proud to maintain to this day.
